First Contact In Her Name Book 1 eBook Michael R Hicks
I changed my review of the series from 5 stars to one. The series is “ok” until you get to the brutal gang rape at the end of book 5. It has no literary value and if you like that stuff you seriously need counseling!

First Contact In Her Name Book 1 eBook Michael R Hicks Reviews
<Spoiler Alert - plot elements will be discussed> I found this book quite engaging and filled with promise. I will definitely purchase the second book in the hopes it will fulfill my expectations. The story centers around a predatory space alien race that is seeking something unrevealed by the author. The aliens are established in a caste system wherein each caste has a specific function in society, such as healers and engineers, with the all-female warrior caste dominant. Relative to human abilities, the aliens are overpowering; but human technology and an odd sense of honor or fairness by the aliens makes the humans competitive. The alien warriors are a curious mixture of Earth type behaviors, such as gladiatorial matches, and the previously mentioned honor system. There are glimpses of what seems to be a mind-link between all warriors such they they experience near-orgasmic pleasure in battle to be shared with the all female warrior caste. The highest ranking warrior leaders are like warrior-priestesses, and possess what is either a technology edge or magic abilities such as unaided transporting and walking through walls. There seems to be some tenuous mind-link to the Queen of the aliens, millions of light years away, that isn't explored much. I detracted points for the mind-link and the magic. An Earth exploratory ship is captured and considerable narrative time is spent in the doomed lives of the crew as they learn of their captors' ways. One Earth crewman survives is is awarded a sort of religious status as "Messenger", and is sent back home to let Earth know the aliens are coming. The Messenger is the central protagonist and is an engaging character, but I hope that his initial timidness turns into the warrior mindset he will need in future battles. There is a roughly even mix of ground combat and space navy ship to ship combat. This first book is largely about the Earth forces learning their opponents strengths and weaknesses, often with extreme amounts of casualties. The body count is very high in this book. In future books of the series, I am hoping for a bit more emphasis on the traditional combat sequences and less on the paranormal aspects. While I indicated that a second book purchase is a certainty, the unappealing paranormal aspects could curtail purchases beyond that.
Oh, wow. I should start by saying that not only do I read a lot (among other things, I edit other people’s writing), but that a lot of what I read is dull, uninspiring or simply not all that interesting.
But I accumulate ebooks, particularly free ones. Then, when I am casting about for something new to read, I scroll through the library on my tablets/s until something strikes my fancy. I’ve encountered several series that were good enough to hold my interest, at least until the cost of the next book exceeded my interest level.
So when I began First Contact, the first of the In Her Name series, I wasn’t expecting more than a decent read. God, was I surprised. By the time I finished that first book, I owned all nine books in the series. I’ve finished reading them and not only am I disappointed to have reached the end, I want to know what happens to the characters after! There aren’t many series that I react to like that. The only science-fiction series that compares, in my mind, is David Weber’s Honor Harrington series, and from me, that is high praise indeed. I’d give these books six stars if I could - or perhaps ten. They’re that good.
I read the first book of the second trilogy and loved every page of it. Finally I found this first of the prequel. I was so looking forward to it. It started out really good, but then...
In any case - the setting is great
Humanity is settling the stars and exploring - slowly moving through class 1 civilization paces. In one of these explorations it meets an unfriendly but canonical class 3 civilization. That is able to harvest energy of entire star systems, collective thinking, unified purpose, basically unlimited technology. Without any explanation more advanced civilization starts slaughtering "ours" - thereby acting as The Great Filter - fitting the Fermi Paradox.
Then the plot quickly goes south. Class 3 civilization is cursed, you see. They have only one chance to save themselves or they will breed themselves out of existence in just three centuries. The salvation is expected to come in a form of a single male. Not just any male. The Kreelans have been genetically modified to kill all outsiders, seek perfection in their assigned line of pursuit, but more importantly - instantaneously communicate with each other through some highly specific physical principle. The savior is expected to have all the same traits but as a result of a natural mutation of a completely unrelated species.
So what does the dying class 3 civilization do? That right - starts slaughtering newcomers in the hope that savior will let himself be known in the field of battle, and - yes willingly help them out of their predicament. Yeah - I thought it was an awesome idea too! Not say design a sensor where every human is tested (and then killed), not say every human somehow downloaded into some matrix to replay later if necessary. No - keep killing by millions, I guess with the great idea of saying "oh well - must have just missed him" when the time comes. In reality even killing a radioactive spider which is supposed to bite the mother who will give birth to the mutation that still needs to be triggered...
Nah, that's for losers... Who can understand these super advanced civilizations...
Basically majority of this very long book is a blow by blow account of a few named individuals killing thousands of "guys and gals in red shirts" if you catch my reference.
It would be interesting to pit Kreelans against say Kal-El people led by General Zod, or any of the super advanced peaceful civilizations from other sci-fi series...
I changed my review of the series from 5 stars to one. The series is “ok” until you get to the brutal gang rape at the end of book 5. It has no literary value and if you like that stuff you seriously need counseling!
