This novella offers the reader a real glimpse over the events that took place in Egypt. It certainly shows much more than what was presented on the news internationally. I found myself being carried away by all the details, even though I know little about politics and Egypt’s situation. The main character is a strong, determined young man, with high moral standard and good intentions who unfortunately can’t do much without the needed support of the people. It is sad seeing that his good friend turned against him, but it feels good noticing that the determination of the main character only grew bigger. Luckily, at least his love from another country was on his side, offering the support and needed understanding, even though only for a limited time. I liked how the love story intertwined with the chronological narration of the events. It made it more interesting and caught my attention. The beautiful poetry is heartbreaking. Unless things won’t change from the ground, the country and its people small chances to face a different future. Great debut novel.
