I thought The Captive (Captive Hearts) was a pretty amazing book, but the Traitor turned out to be even better. Ms. Burrowes created a hero, who found a way to survive, when the odds were against him, and was forced to live with the consequences of his actions, even after the war ended.

Whent the story opens, Sebastian St. Clair, dubbed Traitor Baron, is shunned en masse by the high society and fighting duels with officers, whom he'd interrogated while serving with the French. His life is in a state of limbo: while he doesn't particularly want to live, he doesn't care to die either. With his title going into escheat upon his death, his beloved aunt would be left with little. So, he muddles along, until his aunt hires a new companion.

Milly, a woman of genteel birth, went into service to escape her cruel cousins and their nefarious plans for her future. In St. Clair household, she finds sanctuary, friendship, and ultimately comes into her own as a force to be reckoned with. From their first encounter, it was apparent that Milly and Sebastian were meant for each other: she knew how to respond to his questions and get him to open up to her in return. Their verbal sparring was lively and engaging, and the attraction that built between them didn't outpace the developing friendship.

All the pieces of the story fit together to reveal a greater plot, in which the lines between heroes and traitors were blurred, and impossible choices were made in the name of king and country.

Just finished the The Traitor by Grace Burrowes and I was amazed that I could come to love the romantic hero of Sebastian St. Clair, as he was the anti - hero in the first Burrowes book I read The Captive. I had actually read The Captive directly previously to this book, so my thoughts of the St. Clair character were still fresh in my mine. To understand The Traitor, Burrowes's first book in Captive Heart series is a required read, as the back story of St. Clair is extremely relevant. The book takes place a couple of years after the end of the Napoleanonic War. The character of St. Clair in the war was a French officer, despite him being a peer of the English realm. He had come home to take care of his Aunt Freddy and to oversee his barony. The war isn't over to some English officers to whom St. Clair made acquaintance during the war, and they want revenge for the time they spent as St. Clair's guest.

Burrowes's writes an captivating tale of war, betrayal, redemption and love, as this book at it's heart is the love story that springs up between Millicent Danforth and the Baron St. Clair. St. Clair is a titled noble English peer, whom everyone judges and no on bothers to get to know or understand. Miss. Danforth is his aunt's lady's companion, whom is trying to make her own life `in service'; a lady whom her own family has judged wanting. A lady I might add that is brave, forthright and breath of fresh air in the Barons household. The lovers tale is a complex one, with a myriad of bumps along the path of love. Those bumps make for a fun adventure, and at times a down right `nail biter'.

There were a few minor details that I felt were unresolved, but I am hoping that book three in the series The Laird will bring those to conclusion.
The hallmark of a great writer is that they don't rest on their laurels--despite their past success, they just keep getting better and better. Burrowes proves this again in her latest romance, "The Traitor". I am a devoted fan of her writing, but this novel is her very best yet. There is an early scene in the library where the hero, the Traitor Baron Sebastien St. Clair, kisses the heroine, Miss Milly Danforth; the description of that kiss is one of the finest I've ever read. The scene conveys tenderness, awareness, besottedness, commitment, joy, doubt, lust, love--all the feelings that are, and should be, evoked by the term "romance". Despite the heartbreaking circumstances these two characters have gone through, they seem to instinctively mend each others hearts. Burrowes does not write action romances--if that is what a reader wants, that won't be found between the covers of her books. Rather, her stories are a gradual exposure, like a flower unfurling, as the characters become more aware and understanding of their relationship. I love the way the way they speak to each other so carefully, the way they feed each other and the way they treat the animals in their care. There is a special intimacy that Burrowes creates in her books, and "The Traitor" is exceptional in that it deals with two characters who could be perceived, on a superficial level, as unloveable. Sebastian has become one of my very favorite romance heroes--he is an unusual and complex man, trapped in an awful situation. The only thing disappointing about this book was that it had to end. It won't be long before I am re-reading it.
I have read 17 Grace Burrowes books, the most recent The Traitor. I've enjoyed all her stories but this one was my favorite so far, which surprised me because Sebastion St. Clair was a torturer for the French in the previous book. In this emotional and interesting story, Sebastion has claimed his Barony in England and is known as "The Traitor Baron" by English soldiers he tortured. Millicent Danforth becomes his Aunt Freddy's paid companion, and the interaction between her and Sebastion is terrific. I was pulled into the story from the very beginning, and enjoyed all the characters, especially Michael Brodie and Aunt Freddy. This book was a departure from the author's usual because there was no graphic sex, which Ms. Burrowes can write beautifully, but I was so engrossed in this story of acceptance, redemption and love, I didn't miss it in this book.

Another aspect of Ms. Burrowes' work that I thoroughly enjoy is her mastery of English as spoken in the Regency period. I keep a notebook by my side when reading so I can write down words that particularly interest - or entertain - me. "Looby" is a personal favorite!
